Event Details:
Northland Power Inc., through its wholly owned affiliate Southwest Energy Storage LP (“Southwest Energy Storage”) and its partner Baseload Power LP (“Baseload”), are developing a Battery Energy Storage System project in the Municipality of Lakeshore, Ontario, (the “Project”) in response to a request for proposals (“E-LT1 RFP”) issued by the Government of Ontario through the Independent Electricity System Operator (“IESO”). After more than a decade of strong electricity supply, Ontario is entering a period of substantially decreasing electricity supply and increasing electricity demand that will require new electricity resources this decade. To address these needs, the IESO is competitively securing 4,000 MW of near-term capacity through a number of long-term requests for proposals, including 1,500 MW through the E-LT1 RFP, which will focus on meeting emerging system reliability needs.
About the Project
The proposed Project is an up-to 350-Megawatt, 1,400 Megawatt-hour battery energy storage facility planned to occupy only a portion of the red outlined parcel of land shown in the attached map (the “Property”). The Project will consist of battery storage enclosures, electrical inverters and transformers, internal access roads, electrical and communication cabling, a small transmission substation and other electrical and infrastructure facilities. The Project will connect to the Hydro One Networks Inc.’s transmission system that is located directly across the street from the Property. The Project is intended to improve the electrical transmission system in the region and across Ontario, addressing weak points in electrical capacity, efficiency and reliability, by charging during times of reduced demand and discharging during times of peak demand.
Our Commitment to Community Engagement
Northland has considerable experience and expertise in community and Indigenous engagement and consultation through its preceding projects here in Ontario, and globally in other key markets where we operate. Engagement, which is followed by community consultation for the lifecycle of a Project has been the key to establishing, building and maintaining excellent community relations for our Projects.
Northland and Baseload are now planning a second Public Community Meeting for the SWES Project to which local residents and Indigenous communities are invited to attend. The meeting will be held on February 8, 2023, from 6:00PM to 8:30PM at the Comber Community Centre.
